Neogenyx Fuels developed, owns, and operates the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) biogas facility at the Dos Rios Water Recycling Center in Bexar County, Texas. The facility captures methane generated during the sewage treatment process and processes it into pipeline-quality RNG – transforming what was previously flared into a renewable energy resource sold through a nearby commercial pipeline. This was the first wastewater biogas to RNG facility in the U.S. to commercially sell biomethane through a private sector partnership, making the project the first sustainable initiative of its kind in the nation.
The facility is designed to process over 1.5 million standard cubic feet of biogas per day, delivering a minimum of 900,000 cubic feet daily to the open market. Achieving commercial operation in 2010, the plant converts what was once a wasted byproduct into a low-carbon energy source – while returning annual royalties on the sale of gas to SAWS, reducing the cost of operations and keeping rates affordable.
The facility completes a “recycling trifecta” at Dos Rios, where SAWS now recycles or reuses nearly all waste entering the plant: biogas is captured and sold as energy, 80% of biosolids generate compost used to improve soil quality, and 115 million gallons of high-quality recycled water are used daily by the community – serving the San Antonio Riverwalk, golf courses, parks, and commercial and industrial customers.
Beyond converting waste into energy, the SAWS biogas facility delivers significant environmental and community benefits, including:
