Neogenyx Fuels designed, built, owns, and operates the Ox Mountain LFGTE power facility at Republic Services’ Ox Mountain Landfill in Half Moon Bay, California. The 11.4 MWe facility captures naturally occurring landfill gas and converts it into renewable electricity – transforming what was previously flared into dependable, dispatchable power for two Bay Area municipal utilities, the City of Palo Alto and the City of Alameda.
Recognized as EPA’s Project of the Year in 2009, the facility transforms what was once a wasted byproduct into a reliable, affordable source of renewable electricity for two Bay Area municipal utilities – the City of Palo Alto and the City of Alameda – under a 20-year contract with San Mateo County. At launch, the plant was twice as powerful as any other landfill gas project in Northern California and is ranked among the top 10 landfill gas power plants in the nation by total annual net generation.
Six reciprocating gas engine generator sets capture methane-rich landfill gas and convert it into renewable electricity around the clock, generating 81.5 GWh annually – enough to power ~11,900 homes. Achieving commercial operation in 2009, the facility first powers its own on-site operations (including the engines and all on-site landfill operations) before delivering surplus electricity to the grid for distribution to Palo Alto and Alameda.
By capturing landfill gas that would otherwise be flared, the Ox Mountain facility prevents the release of greenhouse gases while displacing fossil fuel-generated electricity on the California grid – supporting the Bay Area’s renewable energy goals and the state’s broader decarbonization targets.
