Landfill gas drives the BMW Manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the largest BMW Group production facility in the world. At the time, Waste Management’s Palmetto Landfill provided ~50% of the plant’s energy needs. Neogenyx Fuels developed, owns, and operates the landfill gas processing system that delivers the energy, through its 9.5 mile pipeline, to BMW to produce electricity and thermal for more than two decades.
In 2023, BMW Manufacturing extended its partnership for an additional eight years – a testament to the project’s sustained performance. The project has earned multiple EPA recognitions, including the Green Power Leadership Award (2003), LMOP Project of the Year (2003, 2006), and Green Star Award (2005).
The LGFTE facility processes 4,000 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) of landfill gas, delivering it to BMW’s on-site energy center. Landfill gas travels a 9.5-mile pipeline from the Palmetto Landfill to Plant Spartanburg, where multiple efficient gas turbines cogenerate electricity and hot water for the eight million-square-foot plant. Achieving commercial operation in January 2003, the project has operated continuously for more than two decades, saving BMW several million dollars annually in energy costs. Benefits include:
